Zambia Under-20 women’s national team goalkeeper Chishala Mfunte says the Junior Copper Queens are determined to seize the advantage in Friday’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier first leg against Burundi in Bujumbura.

Speaking from the team’s base in Bujumbura, Mfunte expressed confidence in the squad’s form and preparation ahead of the crucial second-round tie.

“The team is looking very sharp in training, and the mood in camp is positive,” Mfunte said. “Our strikers have been scoring freely in training, which gives us great hope that we can get goals away from home.”

The young shot-stopper emphasized the importance of defensive solidity as Zambia looks to make the return leg less challenging.

“If we can keep a clean sheet in the first leg, it will make things much easier for us when we play at home,” she explained. “Personally, my main target is to deny Burundi any goals. A clean sheet would be the perfect foundation for us to build on in Ndola.”

The return leg will be played on September 27 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, where Zambia will aim to secure progression to the third round.

The overall winner over two legs will advance to the next stage of qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

Zambia is targeting its maiden appearance at the global competition.
