Women's African Cup of Nations

Why Kundananji is excited to return to Ndola when the Copper Queens host Angola at Levy

Five years after leaving Ndola, Zambia Women's National Team and Madrid CFF striker Racheal Kundananji will return to a place she considers home and play in front of her long-time fans at the Levy Mwanawansa Stadium.

The Copper Queens will tomorrow face Angola in the second leg of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers and Kundananji is thrilled to return to Ndola for the first time since 2018.

The match will be held at the 49,800-seat stadium for the first time. It comes after the Copper Queens thrashed Angola 0-6 away from home in the first leg.

Kundananji began her football career with Konkola Queens in Chililabombwe before moving to Indeni Roses in Ndola, where she was spotted by national team selectors after scoring 21 goals in 18 games in the Copperbelt provincial league.

It was while in Ndola that Kundananji impressed for the national team, scoring three goals in three matches at the 2018 WAFCON to earn a move to Kazakhstan’s BIIK Shymkent, which was her breakthrough.

Kundananji, who has gone on to become one of Zambia’s best female strikers, is excited to return to the city where she made her name.

“I am excited to be coming back to Ndola after a long time when I was playing for Indeni Roses and on Tuesday I will be here again, so I am so excited,” she said in an interview with FAZ media.

Kundananji warns against underestimating Angola

The 23-year-old striker, who was the second-highest scorer in the Spanish Women’s League last season for Madrid CFF with 25 goals, believes tomorrow’s game will not be easy.

“It’s not an easy task despite us having a 6-0 advantage,” she said. “I believe they are coming with full force to try and do their level best in order to win and qualify, so we shouldn’t underrate them.

“We are supposed to concentrate and use every chance we get from the beginning of the whistle until the final whistle.”

Kundananji has been charming fans with TikTok videos promoting the match and encouraging them to fill the Levy Mwanawansa stadium using the popular Copperbelt slang.

“I want the stadium to be full. We want to hear the noise so that we can give the fans what they will come for,” said Kundananji.
