Nine-time record champions Nigeria have become the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after edging Botswana 1-0.

The Super Falcons were sluggish in the first half, struggling to break down a well-organized Botswana side despite creating a few chances. The Mares also had their moments but failed to convert, leaving the game goalless at the break.

Nigeria eventually found the breakthrough in the 89th minute when substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo tapped home from close range after a well-placed pass into the box by Esther Okoronkwo.

Having opened their group campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Tunisia, the Super Falcons will now face second-placed Algeria on Sunday.

Botswana, meanwhile, will take on Tunisia with hopes of finishing third if they can secure a win.

Tunisia drew 0-0 earlier today with Algeria in the other match in Group A.
