The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has reached the semifinal stage, with hosts Morocco aiming for their first-ever continental title after falling short in the 2022 final against South Africa.

Morocco began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Zambia, followed by a 4-2 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo and a narrow 1-0 victory against Senegal. In the quarterfinals, they convincingly beat Mali 3-1 to book a spot in the semis, where they will face Ghana.

Ghana’s road to the semifinals has been dramatic. After a disappointing 2-0 loss to South Africa in their opening match, they drew 1-1 with Mali before thrashing Tanzania 4-1 to secure a spot in the knockout stage. The Black Queens then stunned Algeria with a 4-2 win on penalties after a 0-0 draw to seal their place in the semifinals.

Ghana has reached the WAFCON final three times—in 1998, 2002, and 2006—but lost all three to Nigeria. They are hoping to finally lift the trophy. In their last five meetings with Morocco, Ghana have won twice (3-1 and 2-0 in 2020), while Morocco have claimed the last two victories: 2-0 in 2022 and 1-0 in February this year.

Nigeria, South Africa Showdown

In the second semifinal clash, defending champions South Africa will face off against nine-time champions Nigeria in a heavyweight showdown. The Super Falcons advanced after demolishing tournament favourites Zambia 5-0 in the quarterfinals and are now eyeing a record-extending tenth title. South Africa, meanwhile, will be hoping to retain their crown and claim a second WAFCON trophy.

Nigeria and South Africa have met 13 times. Nigeria has won six encounters (2010, 2014, 2016, 2018 via penalties, and twice in 2024), while South Africa has won five (twice in 2012, then in 2018, 2021, and 2022). The two teams have drawn twice (2012 and 2024).

The WAFCON semifinals kick off tomorrow.
