Zambia Under-17 Women’s National Team head coach Carol Kanyemba has backed the Copper Queens to go all the way and win the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Speaking after Zambia’s 1-0 win over DR Congo in their final Group A match, Kanyemba commended the team’s steady improvement since their opening game. The victory secured Zambia a spot in the quarterfinals of the prestigious continental tournament.

“Zambia started on a low note against Morocco,” Kanyemba said. “It was a game that Zambia was supposed to carry home. Unfortunately, they didn’t, and that brought some doubts in the team. But going forward into the tournament, the team has been improving.”

Despite being impressed by the team’s attacking display and overall growth, Kanyemba pointed out concerns with the defense that have shown in earlier games.

“[The game against Congo] has been evidence of the improvements that have been seen,” she noted.

Looking ahead to the knockout stage, Kanyemba expressed confidence in the Copper Queens’ potential to go the distance.

“Everyone is positive that they will be able to deliver,” she said. “Because reaching that far shows that you can really go further than that.”

Kanyemba continued, “With a lot of effort put in, definitely we will be able to see Zambia in the finals.…… And definitely carry the trophy back home.”

Zambia will now gear up for a thrilling quarterfinal clash against Nigeria on Friday at 18:00 CAT.
