At the heart of Green Eagles Women Football Club’s success is undoubtedly, Loveness Tonge, one of the best keepers in the Zambian Women’s Super Division.

Tonge, a former netball and volleyball player who now plays football, came to Lusaka after putting on some impressive shows for Prison Leopards Queens in Kabwe. Her career has advanced significantly over the last two seasons, especially at Eagles.

She was instrumental in helping the Majestic Eagles of Lusaka finish fourth on the log during her rookie season with the Eagles. She was outstanding during the recently concluded 2024–2025 season, helping the Eagles finish fifth while recording 15 clean sheets.

In an exclusive interview with Bolanews, Tonge expressed hope of representing Zambia, saying “it would be a dream come true.”

Her first national team call up came when she was a part of the squad that took on Ghana home and away during Olympic Qualifiers though as an unused substitute.

“I Would Grab It With Both Hands” – Tonge.

Tonge expressed delight after earning her first national team call up, stating that it boosted her morale as a goalkeeper, knowing that the Copper Queens’ technical bench noticed her efforts in the League. Tonge further added “if the opportunity ever presented itself once again, I would grab it with both hands.“

She further added “their several areas we need to work on in order to improve, that is the reason why we train, “as a goalie, I have the responsibility of keeping the opposition at bay, I would like to make more clean sheets and hopefully we can score more goals next season.”

Despite pressure from fans, Tonge often seems unfazed and has continued to be a picture of composure at the back. Regarded as a linchpin in defence, she has since taken over the captain’s arm band on numerous occasions.
