Lovemore Fazili, the Malawi Women’s Football Team coach, has downplayed his side’s 1-0 defeat to Tanzania on Wednesday night in an international friendly match played at the KMC Complex in Dar es Salaam, insisting the team created a lot of scoring opportunities.
“We missed five scoring chances; had we scored, then the match would have ended 5-1 to Malawi. So, I am not disappointed with the results,” said Fazili.
Malawi is in Tanzania for international friendly games with host Twiga Stars. The plan was also to play Ghana, but the Black Queens pulled out, a move that will see Malawi playing Tanzania twice before returning to Lilongwe.
The friendlies are preparatory for the two teams ahead of the 13th edition of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which starts on 5 July in Morocco.
Reacting to the result, some Malawians are expressing their reservations if the Malawi Scorchers under Fazili will deliver the desired results in Morocco.
But Fazili has called for patience ahead of the WAFCON.
“It was a good match because we missed a lot of chances; we missed about five chances. We created, but missed them; our friends had one chance, and they scored“
“I am not worried for now; we were good on the day. We will go back and tell the girls on the finishing as we approach our next match“
“However, I should also thank goalkeeper [Mercy Sikelo]; she did a good job,” said Fazili.
The Scorchers controlled a large part of the match but got it wrong when facing the net. Tanzania scored the only goal of the match through captain Anastanzia Katunzi.
