Inonge Kaloustian, a female footballer from Clark University in the United States, joined Zambian Women’s Super League side Zambia Institute for Sustainable Development FC (ZISD) earlier this month.
The American-born forward received a Zambian passport three weeks ago and has since earned her first call-up to the National Team.
Kaloustian’s inclusion in coach Bruce Mwape’s 32-member squad of local players has triggered mixed reactions from football fans.
Some feel that it’s too early for her to break into the FIFA Women’s World Cup-bound Copper Queens squad.
However, in an exclusive interview with BolaNews, Kaloustian insisted that she deserved to be called up to the National Team.
She stated that she intends to be an asset to the team and remain a member of the Copper Queens.
“After receiving my first national team call up, my biggest goal is to show up to training every day and give it everything I have, and make my team, family and the Nation of Zambia proud,” Kaloustian told BolaNews. “I hope I can prove myself to be an asset to the team and continue to be a part of the squad for years to come.”
Kaloustian is happy with the reception given to her in the national team camp so far.
“I have felt extremely welcomed by my teammates and coaching staff alike at the National team.” She added.
Why did Inonge Kaloustian leave the USA to join ZISD?
When asked why she chose to leave the US to join ZISD, the American-born player explained that the club approached her after noticing her abilities.
“ZISD saw my skills as a professional player and what I was able to bring to the table,” she said. “And they were the ones to approach me…. I was grateful for the opportunity as it gives me a chance to adjust to the Zambian style of play.”
Kaloustian also described the Zambian Women’s Super league as competitive and filled with talented players.
“I believe the league is very competitive… I’m seeing so much talent both on my own team, ZISD and across the league… It’s been great to see Women’s Football flourishing in Zambia, and to be a part of that is a blessing.”
Meanwhile, Kaloustian has declined to comment on recent social media claims that her caller up to the national team was not on merit.
“I could rather not comment on this seeing that this is just Facebook hearsay…. But I hope to prove myself.” she concluded.
