Kundananji has also indicated that the team is ready to take on Japan on July 22 in their opening Group C match.

Kundananji, who missed the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) targets to help the team to go past the group stage in their maiden appearance.

“I have targeted to get so many individual awards,” Kundananji said. “But as a team has set a target to win the cup because when you go for the tournament, you can’t just target winning the matches but to get the cup.”

Kundanaji and Barbra Banda have previously been chastised by fans for seeming to lack cohesion between them but the Madrid CFF forward has assured that the team has worked on it.

“The coordination, we have worked on that. It is our first time and it is the biggest tournament in football, we need to focus so that we can leave a mark and something to talk about,” she stated.

Kundananji who finished the 2022/23 season as the second-highest goal scorer with 25 goals in the Spanish Women’s League is also of the view that it is not easy to predict the outcome of the match against Spain despite being based in that country.

“It is not about how much you know about the opponents, but the approach of the game. Every game is different, the ball is round, and I can’t say I know much about Spain. No one predicts the game but the approach will predict the game,” she said. “We are ready to face Spain, we are ready to face any team.”

“We are ready”- says Kundananji

On the Copper Queens’ opening match against Japan, she believes the team is ready to face the former world champions.

“We are ready for the [opening] match. We have worked on the mistakes we made in the previous games. And we want to do new things in this game even as we move on to the next games,” Kundananji stated.

The Madrid CFF striker also noted the importance of having all players available during the World Cup including injured first-choice goalkeeper, Hazel Nali.

“On missing Nali, she can be out of the team but she’s always with us in spirit. She is part of the team, I can’t say she is missing since she is with us here. She’s part of the Copper Queens family.”

Kundananji has also applauded the reinforcements which were made to the Bruce Mwape-led technical bench.

“The additions have helped us a lot. Having a video analyst, we are able to review the performances and the team is improving,” she said.
