Malawi’s Scorchers through to the Cosafa semifinal with 100% winning record

In three games, the Scorchers have scored 15 goals and only conceded 4 goals and they are at the top of Group A with 9 points.

Following their win over Madagascar, Malawi will face Mozambique in the semi-finals on Friday at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

In Tuesday’s match, Malawi scored through Vanessa Chikupila, Leticia Chinyamula, and Asimenye Simwaka with Madagascar scoring a consolation goal through Helisoa Kanto.

Before the match, Malawi had registered a convincing victory, trashing Eswatini 8-0 and South Africa 4-3.

Head coach Lovemore Fazili said their toughest match at the tournament was against South Africa but after winning that matchup, she was confident they were going to win the remaining games.

“Our difficult match was against South Africa; with that win, we knew it would be an easy ending for us, hence scoring more goals against Eswatini and Madagascar,” he said.

Commenting on facing Mozambique this Friday, Fazili said it is another difficult match but they expect positive results.

“I am impressed with how we are scoring goals; I know in any match we will be able to score goals. So, Mozambique is a good side and we should expect a tough match,” he added.

Mozambique finished their group with 7 points after a 1-0 victory over Angola and beat Comoros 3-1 plus a draw against Zambia in their opening group match.

The Scorchers are aiming to play in the final and perhaps win the trophy for the first time after losing in the final in 2021 to Tanzania.

They will look to win the title ahead of defending champion Zambia, who also thrashed Comoros 5-1 to progress to the semi-finals.
