Born on May 14, 2007, Green Eagles midfielder Bupe Mwewa’s recent national team call-up demonstrates that hard work pays off.

Mwewa, who was raised in Kanyama and Chibolya, is currently one of Zambia’s most exciting football prospects.

She fell in love with the beautiful game at a very young age and has always aspired to be a professional football player.

“I developed an interest in football when I would go to the ground to watch,” she told BolaNews in an interview. “I think I was only 7 when I decided that football was something I wanted to pursue.”

Mwewa continued: “I started out as a striker but as time went on, most coaches would use me in the midfield. I can play as an attacking or defensive midfielder. Operating in the middle enables me to control the tempo of the game. I love making interceptions and creating goal-scoring opportunities for my teammates.”

Inspired by Bay FC striker Rachel Kundananji, Mwewa highlighted how she looks up to the world’s most expensive women’s footballer.

“She’s somebody I look up to; I think she’s an inspiration for many of us. I love her fighting spirit; it’s the same mentality I like to apply in every game.”

National team call up thrills Mwewa

Due to her exceptional dribbling ability and game-reading intelligence on and off the ball, Zambia U17 Women’s National Team coach Carol Kanyemba has named her in the 35-member provisional squad for next month’s 2024 U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup third round, first leg qualifier against Uganda.

In reaction, Mwewa said, “I am humbled to be included in the provision squad; it can only be God. My dream is to one day represent the senior team and it starts from here.”

Mwewa has been instrumental in helping Green Eagles Women’s FC in their pursuit of a top-four finish in the Zambian Women’s Super League.

She debuted for the Zambia National Service-sponsored side in a 2-0 loss to Indeni Roses last year. Since then, she hasn’t looked back.

Mwewa will hope to make the final squad of the Copper Princesses.

Zambia is aiming to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup for the first time since 2014.

Only three African countries will qualify for the World Cup. The tournament will be hosted in the Dominican Republic from October 16 to November 3, 2024.
