BolaNews highlights the four key talking points ahead of the Copper Queens’ participation in the Yangchuan International Tournament.
The team will be competing in the four-nation tournament alongside China PR, Uzbekistan, and Thailand. Their first assignment will be against Thailand on Saturday.
A victory would secure them a spot in the final on April 8 against either hosts China PR or Uzbekistan.
Nora Häuptle will utilize the tournament to ensure the Copper Queens will be ready to compete at this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in July.
Here are the four things you need to know:
1. The Birth Of New Dawn
Following the Football Association of Zambia’s decision to appoint Swiss coach Nora Häuptle on a 3-year deal, many Zambian football faithful have wondered what she would offer in the dugout. Previously, Bruce Mwape helped the Copper Queens qualify for back-to-back Olympics, but his highlight came when they made their maiden appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup after finishing third at the 2022 WAFCON for the first time ever. Previously, the Copper Queens’ performances have delivered a lot of promise, but they have often capitulated at the height of expectation. Perhaps Häuptle’s appointment is the impetus Zambia needs to finally live up to their billing; the tournament will therefore be a perfect litmus test for the new gaffer.
Under the guidance of Häuptle, the Copper Queens played two friendly matches against Malawi in February, securing a 2-0 victory in one game and falling 2-3 in the other in Lusaka. This weekend will be her first task against non-African opponent whom Zambia has struggled to beat, winning just twice in nine games.
2. Zambia Will Not Be With USA-Based Players
FAZ general secretary Reuben Kamanga confirmed that four players, namely captain Barbra Banda, Rachael Kundananji, Prisca Chilufya, and Grace Chanda, will not be available due to additional travel measures introduced by the new administration in the United States of America. This will provide the technical bench with a chance to assess other players in their absence. Zambia is not only preparing for the WAFCON, but the tournament will also provide the technical bench with a chance to assess several things. Excellent performances will be essential in ensuring Zambia’s development in the run-up to the continental showpiece.
“We are here for this friendly tournament to expose our players and test different squad members. Not all our top players are here, so it’s time for others to step up,” Häuptle said.
3. Mercy Chipasula Next In line
The highly rated 17-year-old, who emerged on the scene after her brilliant performances at last year Cosafa Girls Championship, will be keen on leaving an imprint on the senior national team after impressing in on her debut against Malawi in February. She’s regarded as one of the hottest footballing prospects in the country; Chipasula is currently on the ascendancy.
4. WAFCON Preparation Top Prerequisite
The tournament will serve as a preparatory event for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, providing coach Nora Häuptle with a chance to assess her charges against top opposition. Despite not having a plethora of stars at her disposal, Nora could still depend on Turkey-based duo Lushomo Mweemba and Martha Tembo, and midfielder Ireen Lungu, who plays for Sichuan Women’s FC in China. The squad has also welcomed Hapoel Jerusalem winger Rachael Nachula and the China-based duo of Kabange Mupopo and Fridah Mukoma. The team has received an enormous boost following their arrival.
