Green Eagles Women’s Football Club head coach Albert Mphande has shared how he has adapted to the demands of coaching in the women’s league, with his side enjoying a strong start in the Eden University Women’s Super League.
Eagles currently sit third on the table with 13 points, having lost just once this season—a 3-0 defeat to log leaders Green Buffaloes last weekend.
Mphande, who previously coached Nakambala Leopards, Nkwazi, and other clubs in the men’s league, said patience has been crucial in building trust and instilling his football philosophy among the players.
“I’ve learned to be patient and take time to understand the players,” Mphande explained. “In return, they have embraced my philosophy, and that is why we are starting to see positive results on the pitch.”
Now in his third season in the women’s game, Mphande believes the level of competition has sharpened, with teams and players raising their standards.
“The intensity has gone up compared to when I first joined the league. Players are working harder, and the tactical demands are much higher. That’s good for the growth of women’s football in Zambia. This was my first time working with a ladies team since when I returned from Sweden where I also worked with a women’s club.”
He also praised his squad’s resilience and emphasized the importance of consistency throughout the campaign.
“I’m very proud of the character the players are showing this season. Football is a marathon, not a sprint, so we have to remain focused and consistent if we are to stay among the top sides.”
Reflecting on ZESCO Ndola Girls dethroning Green Buffaloes last season, Mphande said it was a positive sign for the league’s development.
“For a long time, Buffaloes were untouchable, but ZESCO showed it is possible to change that. It tells us the league is competitive now, and that gives teams like Green Eagles the belief that we can also push for the title one day,” he said.
