After a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, Carlos Ancelotti and Real Madrid were eliminated from the 2022-23 Uefa Champions League tournament.

Bernardo Silva scored a brace in the 23rd and 27th minutes to put the citizens ahead, while an own goal from Eder Militao in the 76th minute and a beautiful strike from Julian Alvarez in stoppage time sealed the victory.

Real Madrid who have won the Champions League 14 times failed to defend it against a ruthless City side.

Reacting to the result, Real Madrid manager, Carlos Ancelotti told the media that their opponents were a better side and they deserved to win.

“They played better than us and deserved to win. They put a lot of pressure at the beginning, it worked out well for them because they made it very difficult for us to get the ball in play and they went two goals ahead. From then on, it was difficult to get back into game. We tried in the second half, but it didn’t work out,” Ancelotti said.

The Los Blancos boss said it was a painful loss, but the team will learn something from the defeat and bounce back stronger next season.

“It is a defeat that hurts, it hurts a lot, but it can happen. We reached the semi-finals of the Champions League against a strong opponent, they played better and left us without a final,” Ancelotti said during the post-match press conference. “We have to learn for the next season to be better. I think that reaching a Champions League semi-final is a success because only four teams make it to the last four.”
