Man City win first-ever Champions League title and treble

Premier League Champions, FA Cup Champions, and now European Kings, Manchester City, complete the treble.

Manchester City have won their first-ever UEFA Champions League trophy to complete a treble after defeating Italy’s Inter Milan 1-0 in a tightly contested final at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.

City broke the deadlock in the 68th minute with a superb shot from Rodri in a contest that appeared equally matched for the entire first half.

Inter came close to scoring when a looping header from Federico Dimarco hit the bar before heading it again onto his team-mate Romelu Lukaku on the rebound.

In the 88th minute, Lukaku had another chance to equalise for Inter, but his header went straight at the keeper, who stopped the ball with his knee right on the line.

City have now completed the treble, making them only the second English team to do so, following Manchester United in 1999. They have won the Premier League, FA Cup, and now the Champions League this season.

Guardiola wins a third Champions League

Despite their domestic success, City’s expectations in Europe were relatively low before the arrival of Pep Guardiola in 2016.

Guardiola previously won the Champions League twice with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011 but has since failed to win it again with City in 2021 and Bayern Munich in 2013.

With Saturday’s European victory, he cemented his status as the best manager of his generation.

He has now won the Champions League three times, three UEFA Super Cups, and three FIFA Club World Cups (twice with Barcelona and once with Bayern Munich), and he will be hoping to win more with City.
