English Premier League side, Chelsea FC went from having only one point after their first two Champions League matches to booking a spot in the last 16 with a game to spare on Wednesday night when they defeated Austrian champions FC Redbull Salzburg 1-2.
Despite starting their 2022/23 Champions League campaign with a 1-0 lose to Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb and drawing 1-1 with Salzburg at home, the Blues went on to beat AC Millan 3-0 at home and 0-2 away to top Group E.
On Wednesday night, the Blues marched on to the last 16 in style after their victory in Austria.
Chelsea took the lead in the 23rd minute through a Mateo Kovacic goal before Salzburg’s Chukwubuike Adam leveled the scores in the 48th minute.
It took a Kai Haverts strike in the 64th minute to secure victory for the two times European Champions.
The Blues have now gone nine matches unbeaten across all competitions after the sacking of Germany gaffer Thomas Tuchel last month.
Wednesday’s victory also meant, new Chelsea manager Graham Potter became the second English man at Chelsea FC to go unbeaten in his first nine matches across all competitions since William Lewis in 1906/07, per Optajoe.
Potter who replaced Tuchel at Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion FC will now target to win a European title with the blues in his first season at the club like his predecessor did in the 2020/21 season.
