Arsenal eye UCL last 16 for the first time in six years

If Arsenal beat Sevilla and Lens win away at PSV Eindhoven, the Gunners will seal a spot in the Champions League last 16 with two games to spare.

Arsenal will face Sevilla in their fourth UEFA Champions League group stage match at the Emirates Stadium on tonight.

The Gunners, who beat the Spanish side 2-1 in the first leg, will aim for a win at home to qualify for the next round of the competition.

Should they win and Lens also manage to defeat PSV Eindhoven in the other Group B match, the Gunners will seal a spot in the Champions League last 16 with two games to spare.

It will be the first time since 2017 to reach the knockout stage of the competition.

Mikel Arteta’s side heads into this match following back-to-back defeats last week against West Ham United and Newcastle United.

Arteta is, however, determined to win and challenges his players to step up.

“We have to do a lot of things right to earn the right to win it and against a really good team with enormous experience in this competition,” he said during the pre-match press conference.

He continued: “We have to prove in front of our people how excited we are to play that game and what it means for us.”

Arteta also added: “I think the presence of the team and the maturity they have shown in big games like this had been really good, but it’s about doing it consistently, and on Wednesday we are going to have to do a lot of those things very, very well.”
