Former Rangers FC captain Barry Ferguson has questioned whether any of the new forwards signed by Michael Beale‘s Gers can be considered an upgrade over Zambia’s Fashion Sakala, whom they sold to Saudi Pro League side Al Fayha.
Sakala scored 24 goals in 91 games since joining the Scottish giants on a free transfer in 2021. He left the club at the start of this season in a deal reportedly worth £3 million.
Ferguson, who played 363 games for Rangers and scored 51 goals, is sceptical of the players brought in to replace Sakala. He believes that the Zambian and other players who have left the club are better.
“I’m looking at guys like Danilo, Sam Lammers, Abdullah Sima, and Cyriel Dessers,” Ferguson told the Daily Record. “I am asking for a whole lot more than they have brought to the table so far.
“Right now, the fans are looking at Alfredo Morelos, Antonio Colak, Ryan Kent, and Fashion Sakala and worrying that their replacements simply aren’t as good as the guys they had before.
“They need to start delivering or they will come under serious pressure.”
Ferguson believes “Beale is facing Rangers judgment day, and the clock is ticking on his flops too.”
Was Sakala forced to leave Rangers?
Following his transfer to Al Fayha, Beale said the offer he received was too good for him to turn down.
“He’s done very well for us, and the strength of the relationship (with him) was probably important because the offer for him and his family, I felt, was a very good one. We spoke at length about it, and he leaves with everyone’s well wishes,” revealed Beale.
Sakala has already scored three goals and set up another in five games for Fayha. In the Golden Boot race, he is only two goals behind Cristiano Ronaldo and is level with Roberto Firmino and Karim Benzema.
He will be in action today against Al Shabab in Saudi Pro League round six.
