Brian Kunsunama, head coach of the Aguila Stars, says his team’s 2-1 victory over Atletico Lusaka on Sunday is a welcome boost to their spirits as they strive for consistency in the ZPL National League.
With their first victory of the season, Aguila Stars moved up to ninth place with four points from three games, while Atletico Lusaka stayed in last place with no victories.
For Kunsunama, who was facing his former side, said the victory was both symbolic and much-needed.
“I think the game is as I expected. I said it would be two teams trying to play football, and it turned out that way. After scoring, we had to make adjustments and close the gaps so we could hold on. We needed this more than anything else—to settle down and start believing. I think the boys did a good job today,” Kunsunama said.
He acknowledged Atletico Lusaka’s intensity and challenged his players to rise to that level regularly.
“The boys are stepping up day by day, step by step, and we’ll get better with each game. This was a very important win for us because it gives us belief that it can be done.”
Looking ahead, Kunsunama emphasized the importance of depth and balance in the squad.

“If you want to compete at this level, you need a bench, not just 11 players. I mean, Simon [Tembo] played his first game today in midfield and showed good things. That’s what we want—players who can deliver whenever called upon.”
With the league heading into an international break, Kunsunama says his focus will be on stabilizing performances and building on the momentum from their maiden win of the season.
