Kylian Mbappé scored twice to mark his 100th goal for Real Madrid in 116 games, alongside 15 assists, as José Mourinho’s side secured a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday night in the 265th El Clásico.
Barcelona were hoping to make history by winning their first 10 games of the season and extending their lead at the top of the La Liga table, but Los Blancos had other ideas.
After 41 minutes of play, following several chances from both sides, Mbappé finally broke the deadlock by pouncing on a loose ball inside the box from a Yan Diomande cross and beating the goalkeeper with a shot inside the left post to make it 1-0.
Four minutes later, Lamine Yamal had a chance to equalise but missed a sitter from inside the six-yard box after striking the ball towards goal, only for it to go narrowly wide of the right post.
The first half ended with Madrid in front. In the second half, Barcelona appeared more settled and enjoyed much of the possession. In the 61st minute, they finally found an equaliser through Raphinha, who took a short pass from Pedri in his stride inside the box, jinked past his marker and unleashed an unstoppable shot inside the left post to make it 1-1.
Mourinho masterclass
It appeared the match was heading for a draw, but Mourinho made decisive changes that completely changed the complexion of the game, particularly bringing on Camavinga for Bernardo Silva in the 80th minute.
Seven minutes after his introduction, Camavinga received the ball from Arda Guler following a well-worked attack that started with Jude Bellingham and beat Pau Cubarsí before setting up Mbappé, who made no mistake, firing home from close range after latching on to the pass to score the winner and his seventh El Clásico goal.
The victory moved Los Blancos into third place with 24 points, one point behind second-placed Atlético Madrid and just three points behind Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Mbappé and Yamal now shift their attention to tonight’s Ballon d’Or awards in London, where both are among the favourites to win the prestigious accolade alongside Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane.
