Zambian football icon Kalusha Bwalya has announced that he will not contest the upcoming 2025 Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) elections.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page on Sunday, Bwalya explained that while his initial decision to run was driven by a vision to address the many challenges facing the country’s football, he had reflected deeply and ultimately decided not to move forward with his candidacy.
He emphasized that Zambian football has struggled due to a system that has lost its way, despite engagement with global partners willing to invest in the game.
Bwalya’s statement
“I am filled with hope and determination as a passionate advocate for Zambian football. After much reflection, I have made the decision not to participate in the 2025 FAZ elections,” he wrote.“Our initial intention to run was inspired by a vision to address the challenges facing Zambian football—issues that have hindered our progress and success. We engaged with global partners eager to invest in our football…. Yet they, like many Zambians, have become disheartened by a system that has strayed from its purpose.
Bwalya also urged the football community to demand leadership that embodies the spirit of the game.
“ I urge you to demand a leadership that embodies the spirit of our game. Football is about unity, joy, and the love of our country. Together, we can reclaim our pride and restore Zambian football to its rightful place on the continental stage.
“Thank you for your unwavering support and love for the beautiful game. Together, let’s build a brighter future for Zambian football!”
Why Bwalya withdrew?
Although Bwalya did not explain why he withdrew from the race, BolaNews understands that the FAZ electoral committee is conducting eligibility checks. The checks began on February 1, 2025, which was the first day of nominations.
The eligibility checks were what kept him out of the last elections. It is believed that it is the primary reason for his withdrawal.
Meanwhile, nominations will close between February 7th and 9th.
This year, the FAZ provincial elections will begin on March 15, with the elective annual general meeting on March 29.
