After 36 years, Argentina finally won their third world trophy on Sunday, sparking enormous celebrations back home in the South American country.
However, two female fans caught the attention of many people who were watching the tightly contested final between Argentina and France on TV as they were seen removing their tops in jubilation at the Lusail Stadium shortly after Gonzalo Montiela scored the winning penalty in the shootouts.
The fan, who has only been identified as Noe while her friend is unknown, continued her celebrations by posting on her Instagram account, with the handle @noe.dreams1, rejoicing about her country’s victory over the Les Bleus.
While various reports have suggested that she could be facing arrest for removing her shirt at the stadium, which is prohibited in Qatar, the fan whose bio on Instagram suggests she is an Argentinian model for a clothing brand called Destino Pink appears to be fine as she has been updating her Insta-story and also posted photos of herself a day ago.
Her last post on Instagram read: “And this flag is dedicated to you my friends, family, and all the people of Quilmes and the south area who always support me with messages and words so nice to express their pride and good wishes that I know you do it from the heart! My whole life is in QUILMES…
Proud to have been born in the beer city… From Ezpeleta-Quilmes to the world.”
Her actions, however, were indeed against the Qatari laws, and according to various reports, she and her friend were escorted out of the stadium by security personnel but were not arrested as they joined other Argentinians in celebrating their country’s victory.
“Visitors (men and women) are expected to show respect for the local culture by avoiding excessively revealing clothing in public,” said the Qatar Tourism Authority before the World Cup began.
“It is generally recommended for men and women to ensure their shoulders and knees are covered.”
In the Muslim country, women are not allowed to wear constricting or exposing apparel in public and must cover their shoulders and knees.
It was advised that female World Cup fans cover their chests with scarves, but Noe, who has amassed over a thousand Instagram followers, disobeyed the order, and it is unclear what the Qatari government would do as a result.
