Following an unexpected start in the qualifiers, Nigeria National Team coach Jose Peseiro is currently under scrutiny, with fans questioning his tactical ability to lead the West African heavyweights to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Super Eagles drew their first two qualifier matches, 1-1 against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, earning only two points out of a possible six.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), however, says they would fire the coach if they had the money to pay him off.
NFF executive committee member Nse Essien said they can’t sack Peseiro because they don’t have the money to compensate him.
“If we had the money (to pay for compensation), we would be willing to relieve him of his job. We’re not happy.”
“Everybody is asking for the sack of the head coach. It’s unfortunate that from a possible six points we only have two points. We’re in a very precarious situation,” Essien stated in an interview on Monday upon arrival from Rwanda.
Zamalek is monitoring Jose Peseiro’s situation in Nigeria
Meanwhile, Egypt’s Zamalek Football Club has shortlisted Peseiro as a potential replacement for Colombian gaffer Juan Carlos Osorio.
With the mounting pressure, Zamalek would be hoping an offer to the Egyptian club can be appealing to the Portuguese coach, who still has a running contract with NFF.

According to the Arabic sports website Kooora, an unnamed official from Zamalek revealed that Peseiro is among the candidates for the vacant job.
“Jose Peseiro is among the names already nominated to lead Zamalek,” the source stated.
“He [Peseiro] is just one name among many CVs on the board of directors’ table.”
Despite being among the names considered for the vacant job, Peseiro is understandably not the frontrunner to land the coaching job.
