South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has explained why he chose Pachuca as Bafana Bafana’s base camp for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The South Africa Senior Men’s team will be based in Pachuca, Mexico, for the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.
Bafana will train at the Universidad del Futbol and will lodge at the Camino Real Pachuca hotel.
South Africa will arrive in Mexico on 1st June.
According to SAFA.NET, Hugo Broos said, “So once the composition of the group was made, I knew that the game against Mexico should be a special game for us, not because it’s Mexico but because we had to play that game at high altitude,” he said.
“At the World Cup in 1986, I was here with the national team of Belgium as a player, so I knew I had experienced that before. We should play that game against Mexico; we needed a high attitude camp. So I met the people from Pachusa already in Washington, and they proposed a location here,” he noted.
“We need good preparations” – Broos.
“But I wanted to see the facilities because the facilities have to be good. With the two nice pitches where we can train from, the fitness room, and the hospital. Everything that we need to have a very good preparation for that match,” he said.
“So we decided already with the team manager this will be our home; this will be our base camp for the World Cup in two to three months” noted Broos.
Bafana Bafana is in Group A alongside Mexico and South Korea.
The 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup will run from June 11th to July 19, 2026.
Bafana are making their fourth appearance at the World Cup.
