Gonzalo Montiel scored the winning penalty to secure Sevilla FC’s seventh Europa League title, handing Roma manager Jose Mourinho his first defeat in a European final.
Paulo Dybala, who had been suffering from an ankle injury for the past month, put Roma ahead in the 35th minute before Gianluca Mancini, who provided the assist, scored an own goal to equalize for Sevilla in the 55th minute.
The game went into extra time and a penalty shootout, with the Spanish team winning 4-1.
Mancini and Roger Ibanez both missed from the spot before Montiel scored the winning penalty for Sevilla.
After winning the Conference League with Roma last season, Mourinho became the first manager to reach a UEFA final with four different clubs and the only one to win all UEFA club trophies.
The Portuguese manager has won five European trophies: the Uefa Champions League with FC Internazionale and FC Porto, the Europa League once with Manchester United, and the Conference League with Roma. He also won the UEFA Cup Trophy with Porto.
On Wednesday night, his hopes of winning a sixth European title were dashed by Sevilla, the Europa League specialists.
