Lubambo Musonda, captain of Zambia’s national team, signed a three-year contract with Danish club AC Horsens in 2021 after leaving Polish club Slask Wroclaw.

Musonda helped his team earn promotion to the Danish top flight after only one season, winning the NordicBet Liga title.

However, his club is on the verge of relegation after a string of poor results in the Danish Superligaen.

Horsens lost 2-1 on Friday to Odense to further dent their chances of surviving relegation. They have only managed to record one win in their last 14 Superligaen games.

The defeat on Friday meant that Horsens are now rooted at the bottom of the relegation play-offs table.

Two teams from the six-team play-offs table will be relegated to the second tier.

For Musonda and his Horsens side to maintain their top-flight status, they will have to win their last match against fellow relegation-threatened side Lyngby on Saturday and hope that Aalborg BK loses or draws.

Horsens, Lyngby, and Aalborg BK all have 27 points with one match remaining and are vying for a top-flight spot.

Musonda made 22 appearances in the Superligaen, scoring three goals and providing three assists.

Meanwhile, the midfielder is now expected to lead the Chipolopolo boys against Ivory Coast in their decisive 2023 AFCON qualifier match next month.

Zambia will host the Elephants on June 17, 2023, at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Musonda is among the 29 players that have been summoned by coach Avram Grant for the crucial encounter.

The Chipolopolo Boys just need a point to the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2015.
