Why Daka is not leaving Leicester City despite lack of game time

Despite being linked with several clubs during the January transfer window, Daka did not leave Leicester City, and the reason for this has been explained.

Last year, Zambian striker Patson Daka was on the verge of joining AFC Bournemouth from Leicester City, but the deal fell through on deadline day because Leicester City only wanted to sell rather than loan him. However, the 26-year-old remained the subject of transfer speculation in the January window which closed on Monday.

Since the window opened, he has been linked with Monaco and Everton, but no deal emerged.

According to sources in Leicester City, no talks took place with any club about the Chipolopolo striker’s transfer, despite the English Premier League side’s willingness to sell him.

Daka missed 14 games at the start of the current season due to an ankle injury sustained in August against French club Lens during a preseason friendly.

What’s next for Daka?

After returning from injury, the former RB Salzburg striker has only played 12 games and has one goal and one assist in all competitions. He has only started one game, on December 26, 2024, against Liverpool, when Jamie Vardy sustained an injury and was ruled out of the Premier League game.

The Athletic Leicester City correspondent Rob Tanner told BolaNews that, “Patson [Daka] is the backup striker to Jamie Vardy so he won’t be allowed to leave” unless the club signs his replacement.

Leicester City failed to sign a new striker due to concerns over the English Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR), which prohibit clubs from posting losses of more than £105 million over three years.

Daka, the 2017 CAF African Young Player of the Year Award winner, has had to live in the shadow of 38-year-old Vardy since joining the club in July 2021. His contract will expire next year on June 30, 2026.

He has played 109 games for the Foxes, scoring 23 goals and 14 assists across all competitions.
