Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has tipped goalkeeper Andre Onana to become one of the best keepers in the Premier League.
Onana is among the best-performing players in the current Manchester United squad. He leads the table of most clean sheets (5) kept in the Premier League this season.
However, the Cameroonian has also displayed calamitous goalkeeping since arriving at Old Trafford from Italian giants Inter Milan two seasons ago. He faces a lot of criticism from fans and pundits.
Van der Sar a Premier League and Champions League winner with Manchester United, has however backed Onana to continue growing in confidence.
The Dutch legend once worked with Onana at Ajax.
“He has great rhythm; I experienced Andre as a young player when he came from the youth team in Barcelona to Amsterdam,” Van der Sar said when he appeared on former teammate Rio Ferdinand’s podcast dubbed Rio Presents.
Van der Sar said over the years, Onana has developed into a better player and his strong character will help him climb to the top of the tree of some of the best keepers in the Premier League.
“He needs experience; he needs to make mistakes and it develops you as a person and as a goalkeeper,” van der Sar said. “He has a very strong character, and I think that helps him to become one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.”
