Chelsea FC manager Graham Potter has also reacted to the devastating news of Zambian midfielder Enock Mwepu quitting football, describing it as “terrible.”

Potter who signed Mwepu from FC Red Bull Salzburg last season whilst he was still manager at Brighton and Hove Albion said, he is glad that his life has been saved for his condition could have ‘maybe’ gotten worse.

“Thankfully it isn’t as terrible as it maybe could have been because I think he has been a little bit lucky as much as he can be lucky because he is alive and well,” said Potter.

The gaffer however expressed sadness that a young player like Mwepu has his football career cut short and wished him well for the future.

“At 24 years old and not to be able to play football, it’s terrible. He is a fantastic person, whatever he does he will succeed but it’s a shame we will not see him again on the pitch.”

Mwepu on Monday announcement his retirement from football following a diagnosis of a hereditary heart condition.

According to a statement by Brighton and Hove Albion FC, the condition can worsen over time and would put him “at an extremely high risk of suffering a potentially fatal cardiac event, if he were to continue playing competitive football.”
