Egypt’s injury-time goal hands Zambia first defeat under Grant

The Pharaohs of Egypt needed an injury-time goal to defeat the Chipolopolo Boys in an international friendly match played in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

This was Avram Grant’s fifth match as Chipolopolo’s coach, having won three of his last four with only one draw.

His attempt to maintain an unbeaten run with Zambia has unfortunately failed.

The Chipolopolo played fairly in the first half, with Al Fayha striker Fashion Sakala going close to scoring when he had a one-on-one chance in the 19th minute as Al Ahly’s Mohamed El Shemawy denied him inside the box.

Mohamed Salah also made an effort to put his side ahead but in vain.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw after 90 minutes. However, Egypt broke the deadlock in the fifth minute of additional time when Hamdi Fathi headed Zizo’s cross from the center of the box to put the Pharaohs ahead.

The goal came shortly after Grant made five late changes, replacing Patson Daka, Fashion Sakala, Lubambo Musonda, Kelvin Kapumbu, and Emmanuel Banda with Evans Kangwa, Edward Chilufya, Francisco Mwepu, Lary Bwalya, and Golden Mafweta, respectively.

Meanwhile, the defeat meant Egypt maintained its unbeaten record against Zambia since their 1996 African Cup of Nations 3-1 loss.

Zambia will now shift attention to their next friendly match against Uganda on Tuesday.
