Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena has hailed goalkeeper trainer and Chipolopolo legend Kennedy Mweene for his positive impact on the players when the chips are down.
After a 10-year playing career, Mweene announced his retirement last July.
He left the pitch with a medal cabinet boasting eight Premier Soccer League (PSL) titles, two Nedbank Cups, two Telkom Knockout titles, a coveted CAF Champions League crown, and the glorious CAF Super Cup.
These achievements were enough to earn Mweene a cult hero status at a club where he now forms part of Mokwena’s backroom staff.
While they remain in control in the PSL, Sundowns have not been at their optimum best in the Champions League where they were eliminated last week.
However, they got over that elimination at the hands of Espérance with an authoritative win over TS Galaxy on Monday.
They enjoy a 10–point lead at the top of the DSTV Premiership despite having played three games less than second-placed Stellenbosch who have 49 points.
Mokwena took a moment to shine the light on people who have helped him manage the dressing room in good and bad times.
“I have to give credit to the senior players because they manage the change room Mshishi [Themba Zwane , Denis Onyango, Brian Onyango , they do it [well] even coach Kennedy Mweene because he is very close to the players from the coaching department he [Mweene] is the one that goes there,” Mokwena said.
Mokwena will be hoping his team turns up today when they face Kaizer Chiefs as they look to bag another PSL title.
