It was an own goal that was scored by Zambia defender Aaron Katembe in the 18th minute from a Robert Saize corner kick that sealed victory for Malawi.

The Flames defended the goal well till the end of the match despite Zambia missing great scoring opportunities.

Both sides had an entertaining first half of passing football, creating scoring chances but getting it wrong in the final third. Zambia could leave before the end of the first half, but Moyela Libamba’s first-time connection was denied by Malawi goalkeeper Brighton Munthali.

The first half ended with Malawi dominating play, registering 3 shots on target compared to Zambia’s one. Malawi was also ahead on ball possession (52-48).

Both teams struggled to get into the game in the second stanza. Malawi dominated the defense and midfield, making it difficult for Zambia to pass the ball in the offensive half.

Chipolopolo were first to make changes, bringing in Mathews Chabala for Katembe. The defending champions were in the game and kept piling pressure in search of the equalizer but to no avail.

‘The win, an independence day gift’- Mabedi

Following the win, Malawi is second to Comoros, who earlier thumped Seychelles 3-0. Zambia is third with Seychelles laying bottom in group B.

Malawi coach Patrick Mabedi was impressed with his charges. “I salute my boys, you know we only had one day to train but their performance was something else,” he said.

Mabedi said the win was a gift to Malawians back home who are celebrating Independence Day.
