Comoros coach tips Malawi to win COSAFA, says they are better than Zambia

Three wins in three games, five goals scored, and three clean sheets set a new record for the Flames of Malawi as they cruised to the 2023 Cosafa Cup Semifinals.

Malawi, who came as underdogs, beat defending champions Zambia before Seychelles and finished by beating Comoros 2-0 today at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Malawi scored first through striker Chawanangwa Kaonga from the spot after Patrick Mwaungulu was upended in the box.

No mistake, Kaonga sent the goalkeeper the wrong direction to put the Flames ahead at 30 minutes.

Six minutes later, the Flames were two up as Mwaungulu, who was given his first start at the tourney, connected a Chimwemwe Idana effort. The ball had smashed the bar and fell kindly in the path of Mwaungulu.

Second half there was nothing from Comoros as their attempts were properly handled by Malawi defense.

Meanwhile, Comoros coach Mohamed Bouhari thinks Malawi has what it takes to do better in this competition when compared to Zambia.

“Technically, Zambia was a better team than Malawi. But Malawi has individual brilliance which is giving them an upper hand,” he said in the post-match interview.

Flames coach Patrick Mabedi praised his boys for the effort saying they played according to the game plan.

“Comoros is a good side, I watched them play and I knew it will not be easy to face them. Now we focus on the next match,” he said.

In their group, Malawi finished with 9 points from three games and Zambia is second with 6 points. Comoros is coming third with 3 points with Seychelles bottom without a point.

Last year Malawi only won one match in their group beating Mauritius 2-0, drew 1-all to Eswatini and lost 2-1 to Lesotho.
