Scotland-based striker Chanka Zimba’s father, Solomon, has described his son’s debut for Chipolopolo as a proud moment for the family.

On Tuesday, Chanka came on as a 61st-minute substitute, replacing Fashion Sakala in Zambia’s 5–0 loss to Argentina at the Estadio Alberto J. Armando, popularly known as La Bombonera.

Solomon told Bolanews in an exclusive interview that the debut was a proud moment for his family.

“It was really a proud moment for me, my wife, and the whole family. We were very happy, excited and very proud of him to represent the colours of our motherland,” Solomon said.

Born in Zambia in 2001, Chanka grew up in England but currently plays his football at Inverness Caledonian Thistle in Scotland.

He played his academy football for Manchester City before going on to have spells in the youth ranks of Blackburn Rovers, Cardiff City, and Sunderland, among other clubs.

He is currently enjoying a good season with his club, having scored 18 goals in 38 appearances for the Highlanders.

Solomon said it was never in doubt that Chanka would one day be a professional footballer.

“He showed it throughout his football career; you could tell from his determination, you could tell from his strength, his football knowledge, you could just see that he would be a top footballer eventually,” he said.

Chanka also expressed his delight at making his debut for Chipolopolo.

“I was really excited; it’s a big moment for me. The result wasn’t great, but it was good to be on the pitch and try to make a difference in the game. It wasn’t meant to be today, but I’ll take a lot of learning out of the game,” he said.
