Kangwa Misses Penalty as Hapoel Be’er Sheva Crash Out of Europa League

Zambian international midfielder Kings Kangwa endured Europa League heartbreak on Thursday night as his Israeli club, Hapoel Be’er Sheva, were eliminated by Bulgaria’s Levski Sofia in the lottery of penalties.

Kangwa was among the three Be’er Sheva players who missed their penalties and ultimately decided the fate of their club.

The two-legged second qualifying round tie ended 1-1 on aggregate, with neither side able to find a winner in regulation time; the match proceeded to extra time, but there was no winner. The match was ultimately decided from the spot.

Kangwa, who has been in inspiring domestic form for his club, played the full 120 minutes in midfield and was a central figure throughout the contest, battling tirelessly as his side searched for a crucial away goal that never came.

The Chipolopolo star, who joined the Israeli Premier League side last year, has been a key player for Be’er Sheva, and Thursday’s loss will come as a bitter blow; it is not the end of the road insofar as playing on the European stage is concerned.

The club will shift to the Conference League, where they will face AEK Athens of Greece in the pre-group stage play-offs.
