“I still want to play for the national team,” says Shonga

The Nkwazi FC foward says he wants to return to the Chipolopolo squad following his impressive season in the Zambian Super League.

Justin Shonga

Justin Shonga has been in sensational form since returning to his boyhood club Nkwazi. He made a return to the Zambian Super League following an unsuccessful short stint at Ismaily SC.

He made just four appearances and did not score for the Egyptian side before he was released.

Shonga propelled a move to the highest echelon of South African football back in 2017 when Orlando Pirates snapped up his signature following an impressive season in Zambia.

The forward spent one season at the Soweto-based outfit where he made 77 appearances and scored 16 goals with 16 assists.

He later moved to Tshakhuma, then to Cape Town City before being signed by Ismaily in the Egyptian league.

Six years later, after a career full of ups and downs, the 26-year-old has revitalized his career at the Zambia Police-sponsored side.

Nkwazi may be struggling, but Shonga’s proficiency in front of goal could keep them afloat as they languish in the relegation zone.

The red-hot hitman has already registered 10 goals and six assists since making his return.

When asked in an exclusive interview with BolaNews about Nkwazi’s struggles, Shonga responded, “I am pushing and giving my best so that I can help my team survive at all costs. And we will do our best and leave everything in God’s hands.”

Shonga eyeing Chipolopolo come back

The tricky forward who has 33 international caps for Zambia and 16 goals also revealed his desire to don the Chipolopolo shirt again.

“I still want to play for the national team,am very young and I can give my best if called upon,” he said. “That’s what I have been working on everyday at training and in matches to get a national team call up again.“

With Zambia one win away from qualifying for the 2023 Ivory Coast Africa Cup of Nations, Shonga and many other Zambian players are doing their best to make a cut in Avram Grant’s final squad.

Meanwhile, after a denting 1-4 loss to MUZA FC, Shonga and his Nkwazi team will travel to Lumwana Radiants on Saturday.

Nkwanzi is currently in the relegation zone in 15th place, and a win this weekend will be critical to their chances of staying in the top flight.
