The Zambian government has paid glowing tribute to Chipolopolo Boys striker Fashion Sakala for his recent charitable efforts, which included sponsoring a football tournament in Eastern Province.

The Saudi Arabia-based star, who is understood to have spent over K1 million, also donated over 120 wheelchairs to disabled people in Chipata District.

“This heartfelt gesture is not only intended to provide much-needed support to individuals living with disabilities but also to show them that they are deeply valued and cherished members of the community,” the 27-year-old striker said.

He also donated food to over ten villages in Mbejere to help people cope with the effects of climate change, as the country has been hit by severe droughts.

As if that wasn’t enough, Sakala is also building a secondary school in his hometown of Mbejere in order to reduce illiteracy.

Government salutes Sakala

On Saturday, he was among thousands of soccer fans at the David Kaunda Stadium who turned up to witness the crowning of the Fashion Sakala Eastern Province Cup champions. Young Nkwazi were crowned champions via a post-match penalty victory after a 2-2 draw against Mikalile FC.

Ministry of Sports permanent secretary Chileshe Kangwa described the Sakala’s charity works as “exceptional achievements” and “noble contributions.”

“The government is greatly honored to recognize the exceptional achievements and noble contributions made by the son of the soil, Mr. Fashion Sakala,” Kangwa said.

“This noble gesture by Mr. Sakala did not only bring the people of Chipata together but also served as a platform for talent identification and exposure for young upcoming sportsmen and women, thereby giving them a rare opportunity to showcase their skills and talents, further raising their chances of being elevated to greater heights,” Kangwa added.

He continued: “The government is in full support of undertakings that work towards the wellbeing of society, such as sports recreation activities that help reduce crime, drug abuse, and immorality, among many other social vices.

“The gesture by Mr. Sakala to hold a football tournament and donate wheelchairs to the needy in our society resonates well with the government’s call for reinvesting back home in our communities and the nation. The wheelchairs will go a long way in assisting the underprivileged in society.”
