Many Zambians may want to see Avram Grant step down, but the Israeli is not willing to walk out on Chipolopolo despite overseeing one the worst World Cup qualifying runs in Zambia’s history.
On Sunday, Zambia concluded their 2026 World Cup qualifying run with a 1 – 0 loss to Niger at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. The Menas completed a double over Chipolopolo who they beat 2 – 1 in the first leg played in Morocco.
Zambia’s performance left much to be desired, leaving many people fearing the worst for Chipolopolo as they prepare to head into the Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) in Morocco this December.
Former Chipolopolo midfielder Clifford Mulenga, in a Facebook post suggested that the former Chelsea and West Ham United trainer should step aside or at least be sidelined.
“If his contract has a performance clause, let the FA suspend him,” Mulenga’s post read in part. “Contract review should start now. Brave decisions have to been made.”
Mulenga’s comment is just one among many that are calling on Grant to become a former Chipolopolo coach.
But when it was put to him by Bolanews that Zambians are asking for his resignation, Grant cheekily gave a response that seemed to suggest that he was not going anywhere.
“What do you want me to answer? I lost what?” Grant responded when it was put to him that social media is awash with messages calling on him to resign.
Focus now on Afcon – Grant
Grant insisted that the team has improved under him and the focus is now to help Chipolopolo at the AfCON in December.
Zambia is in Group A alongside Morocco, Mali and Comoros.
“I strongly believe that we have a strong team that can go first, qualify from the group stages [of the AfCON], this is most important.”
In Morocco, Zambia will be looking to better their performance that saw them fail to make it to the knockout stage of the last AfCON.
