Grant unmoved by calls to resign after Morocco defeat

The coach defended his position, stressing the team’s improvement and asking why he should quit

After managing just one win and four losses in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers—and suffering five consecutive defeats this year across all competitions, including at the recently concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN)—Zambia national team coach Avram Grant insists the team is making progress and sees no reason to resign.

The coach was responding to a question on whether he would consider stepping down following Zambia’s 0-2 loss to Morocco at the Levy Mwanawansa Stadium on Monday.

“Why [should I resign?]” Grant asked. “The team played good, the team is making progress. I think the team is much better than I found it.”

“We controlled the game against Morocco, I think we have a good team. We have created a good team and I will continue to do my job as long as I am here. I don’t understand the question,” added the 70-year-old former Chelsea FC coach.

FAZ, Grant contract

Before Grant’s appointment in December 2022 on a two-year performance-based contract, Zambia had missed qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) three times in a row. His deal was set to be automatically extended by two years if the team qualified for the 2023 AFCON, which he achieved.

Clause five of his contract stated: “This is a performance-based contract which shall remain in force for a period of two (2) years from 3rd January 2023 to 2nd January 2025. The contract can be terminated in case of failure to reach AFCON 2023. In case of qualification for the AFCON 2023, the contract will automatically be extended for a further two years until January 2027. During this period the contract can be terminated in case of failure to qualify for CHAN, World Cup 2026.”

Grant not only qualified for the 2023 AFCON but also secured a place at the upcoming 2025 edition, set to kick off this December—triggering the extension of his contract until January 2027.

However, FAZ may consider ending the deal should Zambia fail to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, one of the conditions outlined in the agreement.

For now, Grant is set to lead the team at the AFCON in Morocco, where they will face the hosts, Comoros, and Mali in Group A.
