Govt halts Chipolopolo funding, Orders FAZ to Justify Grant’s poor performance

Government has given the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) seven days to explain what measures have been put in place to ensure that Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant is performing according to the terms of his contract, amid growing concern over the team’s poor results.

The State has also asked the association to show cause why FAZ should continue receiving financial support for Chipolopolo following a poor run of results.

In a letter title “Request for justification for continued government financial support despite the men’s national team’s poor run of results,” Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts permanent secretary Kangwa Chileshe has demanded a detailed explanation from FAZ regarding the national team’s disappointing performances and the continued use of public funds.

“The Ministry is writing to express its concern regarding the continued poor run of results recorded by the senior men’s national football team in recent international engagements. As a key stakeholder in the development of football in the country, we believe it is essential to understand the rationale behind continued government funding in the face of these disappointing performances.”

Chileshe reminded FAZ general secretary Machacha Shapenda that despite the country’s tight fiscal situation, government has continued to shoulder the cost of the national team, including Avram Grant’s salary, player bonuses, accommodation, and air travel.

“Despite the current financial constraints facing government, significant resources continue to be allocated to support the national team and the technical bench, including expenditure on accommodation, air tickets, winning bonuses, and a portion of the coach’s salary. This support has been extended at a considerable cost to the taxpayer, making it imperative for us to seek a clear justification for its continuation, especially in the absence of commensurate results on the pitch,” he said

The letter comes a day after Chipolopolo’s 1-0 loss to Niger in the 2026 World Cup qualifier at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Chileshe has specifically asked FAZ to explain how it is monitoring Avram Grant’s performance and ensuring that he is delivering according to his contract.

“In this regard, the Ministry kindly requests your office to provide a detailed explanation on the following matters: 1. What measures are being taken to address the team’s current poor performance and to ensure the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of football in Zambia? 2. What steps are in place to monitor and ensure that the head coach is delivering according to the agreed terms of his contract? 3. Why should government funding not be suspended or terminated in view of the national team’s poor performance despite the substantial financial investment?”

Chileshe stated that accountability for public funds is paramount, warning that continued support will depend on FAZ’s justification.

“The Ministry strongly believes that transparency and accountability in the use of public funds are paramount. Football remains a cornerstone of Zambia’s sporting and cultural identity.

“Beyond its entertainment value, it has the power to unite communities, promote national pride, and inspire youth to adopt healthy lifestyles. This is why the government has remained committed to supporting the game through various interventions.

“However, we must ensure that public investment yields meaningful outcomes and drives real progress in the sport. By providing a clear and compelling justification for continued financial support, we are confident that together, we can work toward building a stronger and more sustainable football sector that benefits all Zambians.”

He stated that acting on the directive of Honorable Elvis C. Nkandu, Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, the Ministry announced, has halted financial support to the men’s national team until FAZ presents a credible roadmap to restore the team’s competitiveness.

“Following the guidance from the Honorable Minister of Youth Sport and Arts, Honorable Elvis C. Nkandu, the Ministry, has halted support to the Football Association of Zambia (men’s national football team) until a clear roadmap is provided on the restoration of the Zambian men’s football game.”

He said acknowledged existing financial commitments to FAZ, including unpaid salaries, bonuses, and allowances, but emphasized that future support will depend on the association’s response.

“The Ministry is committed to settling all outstanding arrears that have been incurred to date. We would appreciate receiving your detailed response no later than 20th October 2025 to enable the government to make an informed decision on the way forward.”
