Zambian striker Fashion Sakala has revealed in an exclusive interview with BolaNews that he intends to retire in Saudi Arabia.
The 29-year-old recently signed a contract extension with Saudi Pro League side Al Fayha, reportedly worth $4 million per season, keeping him at the club until 2029.
Sakala joined Al Fayha in August 2023 from Scottish side Rangers FC and has since established himself as one of the club’s most influential attacking players. In 113 appearances across all competitions, he has scored 44 goals and provided 20 assists.
His impressive performances have significantly enhanced his reputation in Saudi Arabia, making him one of Zambia’s most productive players abroad.
During the last transfer window, Sakala revealed that he received multiple offers from clubs in Europe, including teams from Scotland, England and France, but turned them down because he is happy in Saudi Arabia.
“I had so many offers. A lot of clubs in England, France and Scotland wanted me, including my former team but I am happy in Saudi Arabia,” Sakala said.
Sakala Snubs Europe
Before renewing his contract with Al Fayha, several reports in France indicated that he had been offered a deal to move to French side RC Lens. The Ligue 1 outfit had reportedly been monitoring Sakala for several months and identified him as a key transfer target as they sought to strengthen their attacking options.
“Saudi Arabia is a very nice country. I like it there, and I will retire there,” Sakala disclosed. “In 2029, I will be 32, and I think I will sign maybe another two-year contract with Al Fayha. I plan to retire in Saudi Arabia.”
Asked if it is the money that is encouraging him to stay in Saudi Arabia, he said, “It’s not about the money. I love the country, the club and the people. Many people don’t know much about Saudi Arabia, but it’s a nice country.”
Sakala is now in camp with the Chipolopolo Boys and is expected to captain the team against Algeria on Friday in their opening match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
