Zesco United fell 1-0 to Zamalek SC in their CAF Confederation Cup Group D opener on Sunday.
Zamalek started the match on the front foot, launching a series of attacks throughout the first half. Their pressure paid off in the 42nd minute when Seifeddine Jaziri fired a low strike into the bottom-right corner, beating Zesco goalkeeper Philip Sakauta to give the hosts a 1-0 lead just before the break.
Zesco emerged stronger in the second half, introducing Pascal Phiri for Abraham Siankombo and Amine Hiver for Lindo Mkhonta. The substitutions brought renewed energy, allowing Zesco to take control of possession and push forward with greater purpose. However, despite improved dominance, they lacked the decisive touch needed to find an equaliser.
Zamalek stood firm and protected their narrow advantage to secure a 1-0 victory.
Zesco will host Al Masry next Sunday, with the Egyptian side coming into the fixture after a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs earlier today.
Zamalek, on the other hand, will travel to South Africa to face Kaizer Chiefs.
