Egyptian side Zamalek begin their CAF Confederation Cup Group D campaign tonight against Zambia’s Zesco United at Cairo International Stadium, with kickoff set for 21:00 CAT.
Head coach Ahmed Abdel Raouf said starting strongly is essential as they aim to set the tone in a competitive group.
“It is the first match in the group, a match that will determine many things. We are required to get the three points,” he said.
Abdel Raouf confirmed the squad is largely available despite recent heavy scheduling and personal circumstances for some players.
“We played three strong matches in 10 days and lost important players in a short time, but now most players are available and ready,” he noted.
On the goalkeeper hierarchy, he added:
“Both Awad and Sobhi are still number one right now. This will be decided between them later.”
The coach also called for more respect and patience toward homegrown managers.
“We need a little patience when dealing with Egyptian coaches… they deserve space just like other coaches,” he said.
Captain Omar Gaber underscored the importance of setting the pace early in the tournament.
“Every match is going to be very important. We want to start strongly to shape the group going forward,” he said.
He also acknowledged the emotional atmosphere surrounding the fixture following the passing of club legend Mohamed Sabri.
“We hope to present a great match for him. Tomorrow’s game will be for his soul, God willing,” Gaber said.
He added that supporters are expected to play a major role:
“There will be very large attendance from Zamalek fans, as usual.”
Zesco United head into the match seeking to make their own statement in a tightly-matched group.
