“We have put in place a strategy to win” — Mighty Wanderers eye Galaxy upset

The Malawian side is banking on league form and careful planning to reach the group stages.

Malawi side Mighty Wanderers have vowed to upset Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy when the two meet next week in the CAF Confederation Cup at Bingu National Stadium.

It has taken eight years for Wanderers to return to continental competition. Their last appearance was in 2018 when they faced AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the CAF Champions League, where they lost 6-1 on aggregate.

But Wanderers’ director of football, David Kanyenda, said this time they have done their homework to ensure they can eliminate Galaxy and reach the group stages.

In an exclusive interview with BolaNews, Kanyenda said he is confident his side will do well because they will be playing in the CAF Confederation Cup and not the CAF Champions League, where they previously failed.

“This is not the same tournament we participated [in 2018], last time it was CAF Champions. The quality is not the same. It’s like playing in the Europa League which is different from playing in the UEFA Champions League,” said Kanyenda.

On facing Galaxy

Looking ahead to the Galaxy clash, Kanyenda said: “We are undefeated in the league back home. We believe we can hold on our own. Galaxy is a good team, but we have put in place a strategy to win.

“You need also to know that Malawi was in Botswana last week and we managed to win against Namibia, our players were there, we can replicate that victory.”

On preparations, Kanyenda admitted there is always room for improvement, but insisted his side is ready to face Galaxy even though they failed to play a friendly match.

“We had wanted to play a team from Mozambique but it pulled out as they had a local game there, but we hope if we go through to the next stage, we will have a friendly match. When we went for a draw in Tanzania, we linked up with different clubs but they were also busy for a friendly,” he said.
