Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga scored a hat-trick against Zimbabwe, moving him closer to becoming Kenya’s all-time leading goal scorer.

The captain scored five goals at the recently concluded Four Nations tournament in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Kenya defeated Malawi 4-0, with Olunga scoring twice before completing his impressive performance with a hattrick, which helped the Harambee Stars recover from a 1-0 deficit to win 3-1 against the Warriors of Zimbabwe in the final.

With 29 goals in 58 caps, the Al Duhail striker has moved up to fourth place on the all-time goal-scoring list for his country. Olunga’s hat trick moved him ahead of Livingstone Madegwa and Ali Akajo, who both had 26 goals.

Above Olunga, there is AFC Leopards legend Elijah Lidonde, who scored 33 goals in 26 appearances for the national team, while Dennis Oliech comes is second placed with 34 goals 76 games.

The ex-Girona striker, who turned 30 on Tuesday, will now aim to equal the long-standing record of 35 goals in 66 games set by former Gor Mahia forward William Ouma.

Kenya’s leading goal scorer, Ouma, scored all of his goals between 1965 and 1977, but Olunga is now only six goals away from matching him.

Undoubtedly, Olunga, who made his debut in 2015, is one of Kenya’s best goal scorers, as evidenced by his seven-goal streak over the last three games.

He scored twice against the Seychelles in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November, followed by five goals in the Four Nations tournament.
