Malawi’s Super League has suspended all games this week following the tragic deaths of state vice president Saulos Chilima and nine others in a plane crash.

Following the international FIFA break, league games in all Malawian regions were scheduled to resume on Saturday and Sunday.

In a letter dated June 11, 2024, the league organisers said: “In view of this tragic demise, all Super League games this weekend have been rescheduled to later dates.”

Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, issued an announcement on Monday evening calling for a search.

The plane was found in Chikangawa Forest on Tuesday morning, with no survivors. The bodies were recovered with the assistance of the Zambian Air Force.

The vice president was supposed to attend a burial ceremony for Raphael Kasambara, a lawyer and close friend who was discovered dead at a lodge in the capital, Lilongwe.

Eight others who were with the vice president on the plane are the ex-wife of Malawi’s former president, Bakili Muluzi. Shanil Dzimbiri, Daniel Kanyemba, Lucas Kaphesi, Col. Owen Sambalopa, Major Flora Selemani, Major Wales Aidini, Abdul Lapuken, and Chisomo Chimaneni.

President Chakwera has since declared 21 days of national mourning.
