Patrick Mabedi, the coach of the men’s national football team, has had his contract with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) terminated.

The decision was widely expected after a poor performance of the team, failing to qualify for 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) losing all four qualifiers in the process.

FAM made the decision following at an emergency committee meeting held on 28th October 2024.

The FA has since appointed Zimbabwean, Kalisto Pasuwa as head coach, with Silver Strikers coach, Peter Mponda, as assistant coach, to oversee the Flames into the future assignments.

In May this year, FAM had appointed Pasuwa to take charge of the U-23 national team.

Pasuwa, first task was to lead the team at this year’s COSAFA Cup in South Africa, while Mabedi, was leading the main in World Cup qualifying matches.

However, the FA withdrew from the regional tournament, following a plane clash accident that killed the country’s Vice President Saulos Chilima and 8 others.
