CAPS United head coach Ian Bakala has outlined his immediate priority of stabilizing the team and lifting them out of the relegation zone in the Zimbabwe Premier League.

Appointed last Thursday, Bakala took charge of his first home match on Saturday, guiding Makepekepe to a 1-1 draw against Herentals.

The result leaves the Green Machine in 14th place with nine points from eleven matches, having registered two wins, three draws, and six defeats.

Speaking after the match, Bakala said he is still adjusting to his new role and getting to know the squad.

He stressed that it is too early to set lofty ambitions, with the current focus firmly on stabilizing performances and improving results.

However, Bakala added that once the team regains its footing, the long-term goal will be to challenge for honours.

“I think the target comes once I stay long because I just came in; obviously, the target is to take something from the league,” Bakala said.

“I think at first, we just have to organise ourselves. That’s when we can talk about the targets because at the moment where we are; we can’t talk about the target. We have to fight and move out from the red zone; that’s when we can talk about the target because by then we can say, Now we’re settled and fighting for the league, but at the moment we can’t talk about the target; we just have to focus and move out from where we are.”

CAPS United’s next assignment is the Harare derby against 16th-placed Dynamos at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday at 15:00 hrs.
