Malawi National Football team’s dismal start in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers has seen disappointed fans including the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) plotting to find a new coach for the Flames of Malawi.

A source in Malawi has told Bola News that the FA is looking for a new coach to take Patrick Mabedi’s post.

Malawi has lost all of its AfCON matches, including last week’s 3-2 loss to Burundi at home and 3-1 defeat to Burkina Faso away.

Mabedi doubts if Malawi will qualify for the 2025 Afcon. “We need to face reality here, our chances to qualify are slim, it is disappointing to have lost all games and conceding 6 goals in two games,” he said.

Though FA is plotting to replace him, they will struggle in firing him as the former Kaizer Chiefs player is remaining with a year and months contract. His contract with FAM will expire in December next year.

Mabedi to get new duties.

According to the source, the FAM will give Mabedi other roles to finish his contract while assigning a caretaker coach to oversee the team in the next AfCON matches.

“Firing him will not work because he will definitely go to court, so the plan is to keep him within by while assigning him other roles,” he said.

FAM’s first deputy president Madalitso Kuyera said the association will meet Mabedi to review the performance of the team.

Some of the targets, FAM gave Mabedi were to qualify for the Afcon 2025 which looks not to be possible.

“It is obvious we are unhappy with the team’s current performance, and we have to apologize to Malawians for the results we have given them,” he said.
