Malawi interim coach Kalisto Pasuwa says his team is aiming for their first victory in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers when they face Burundi on Thursday in Ivory Coast.

This will be his first match in charge of the Flames after taking over last week following Patrick Mabedi’s dismissal.

Pasuwa has only three days to produce results, as his first training was on Monday. The team will leave Malawi today for Ivory Coast.

“It is the wish of every coach to win games; I think we have capable players who can give us results,” Pasuwa said after his first training session with the team.

“I must say this: for any team to win games, it means there is a process; you cannot just wake up today and have those results; it is a process. We need to have that process so that we can have a team that will give those results,” he said.

Pasuwa will be assisted by Peter Mponda, who coaches Silver Strikers. The two worked together from 2020 to 2023. Mponda was the assistant coach at FCB Nyasa Big Bullets before he left for the Black Leopards in South Africa.

Malawi is winless after four games in the 2025 Afcon qualifiers. They lost their first match at home to Burundi, followed by another defeat to Burkina Faso. They also lost twice to Senegal and have no points.
